KOTOBUKI TSUMUGI (琴 吹紬)

AKIYAMA MIO (秋山 澪)

Mio is a shy girl in the light music club who plays a left-handed, 3-Color Sunburst Fender Jazz Bass with an attached tortoiseshell pickguard. She originally intended to join the literary club, but was forced into the light music club by her childhood friend and the club's drummer, Ritsu. She gets excellent grades in school, but is bad with listening to stories involving painful experiences, and cowers whenever something gross is brought up. While she can be mature and strict sometimes, she gets embarrased easily, and is often subject to teasing from Ritsu and Sawako, their club adviser. She cites that she chose bass since it is not the center of attention in the band, unlike the guitarist, though being the main vocalist somewhat negates this. Mio is more technical when it comes to music, and Yui often comes to her when she is in need of more guitar tutorials. She is the main vocalist in the group and also writes the songs, although they feature some odd lyrics like ''Light and Fluffy Time''. She is left-handed and is fascinated by other left-handed bass guitar players. Due to an unexpected accident in one of their live performances, a fan club for her is formed, much to her dismay considering the circumstances surrounding it, whose founding member is the former student council president, who also stalks Mio.

TAINAKA RITSU (田井中 律)

Ritsu (Ricchan to Yui and Mugi) is the President and drummer of the Light Music Club, and plays a yellow Rick Marotta Signature Yamaha Hipgig Drumkit, mixed with a Zildjian cymbal set (a floor tom is added in the opening credits, and she plays a white Yamaha Absolute series kit in the closing credits).

She is very energetic and drummer-like, always upbeat, but often has trouble remembering important club activities and announcements, and owes Nodoka a fair number of favors over forgotten paperwork. According to Mio, her room is so messy that there is nowhere left to stand.

She says that she chose drums because they are "cool", but she admits that she has problems with instruments that need intricate finger movements (notably, the guitar, bass, and keyboard).

Ritsu is the kind of person who acts on an idea she just thought of moments beforehand, and has a knack of passing tests by getting Mio to help her in last-minute overnight cramming sessions.

Ritsu and Mio are childhood friends, and Ritsu often makes jokes at Mio's expense whenever she can (which usually ends with Mio hitting Ritsu).

Main character of K-ON!. She is the lead guitarist and lead vocalist in Houkago Teatime. She plays a Gibson Les Paul Standard, in Heritage Cherry Sunburst, nicknamed Giita (ギータ). She joined the Light Music Club, thinking that "light music" meant "easy music" (like whistling or playing the castanets), and picked up the guitar with absolutely no prior experience.

She is easy going, clumsy, and spaces out often. She cannot do more than one thing at a time, but has amazing concentration when she focuses on one subject, achieving outstanding results. However, when she learns something, she usually forgets something else. She is easily distracted by trivialities (usually, cute and adorable things), but is very devoted to her band, and practices very hard when she has to.

Yui relies on her own intuition and self-taught approaches, and doesn't remember any musical terminology (much to the amazement of Mio and Azusa). She has perfect pitch, and is able to tune her guitar without a tuner.

She is fearless, and doesn't feel anxiety or stage fright.

She likes cute things and physical contact (particularly with Ui, and the victim of her skinship, Azusa). She loves sweet things, and is powered by the sweets that Mugi brings, but doesn't gain weight regardless of how much she eats.

She can't stand being either hot or cold, so she spends her winters under the kotatsu, and her summers rolling around the floor with a fan because she also dislikes the air-conditioner.

Yui is quite determined and competitive when she is fired up, but doesn't mind relying on other people - usually Mio, Nodoka, or Ui.
